Southbury Training School employee arrested for Workers’ Comp fraud

SOUTHBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — A Southbury Training School employee has been arrested and charged with illegally collecting Workers’ Compensation benefits while working as a bail bond agent, officials say.

Carol A. Griffin, 45, of Waterbury was arrested on a warrant charging her with one count of Workers’ Compensation fraud, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Officials say Griffin reported a work-related injury in July 2014 while working at Southbury Training School. She received nearly $68,000 in Workers’ Comp benefits through August 2015. The warrant alleges that Griffin worked as a surety bail bond agent for a Meriden bail bonds business and wrote bonds at Waterbury Superior Court that allowed her to earn more than $126,000 a year. Griffin denied that she had other employment.

Griffin surrendered on Friday and was released on a written promise to appear in court on October 14. Griffin is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
